Private 4G and 5G NaaS for Enterprises, from Federated Wireless and VMware

By Alex Passett

In August, Federated Wireless announced its partnership with World Wide Technology to deliver turnkey private wireless LTE and 5G solutions to enterprises and carriers, bringing accessibility, flexibility, and simplicity to those solutions’ consumption models. As Federated Wireless’ Chief Technology Officer Kurt Schaubach said at the time of the announcement, “Bringing what’s needed to assemble a whole comprehensive wireless ecosystem can be challenging. Best-in-class technology and top network deployment expertise is necessary to expand service offerings at a hyperscale pace.” (Read this full story on IoT Evolution World here.)

Since then, Federated Wireless continues to make network innovation-centric news. In a recent statement, the company confirmed its selection by VMware – the multi-cloud services provider focused on digital innovation and enterprise-scale controls – to deliver private 4G and 5G NaaS (Networks-as-a-Service) for its new VMware Private Mobile Network Service.

As part of this collab, Federated wireless will build and operate private 4G and 5G RAN (Radio Access Network) infrastructure to be deployed on customers’ premises. In turn, VMware will provide its Private Mobile Network Orchestrator to manage the network and seamlessly integrate it with existing IT management platforms.

This joint solution also features:

  • Centralized orchestration and automation of end-to-end networks
  • Enhanced security and optimized connectivity for business environments and mission-critical applications
  • Carrier-grade performance with SLAs tailored to enterprises requirements
  • Ability to leverage Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) shared spectrum, as well as privately licensed spectrum

As Kevin McCartney, Vice President of Alliances at Federated Wireless, then went on to describe:

“Enterprises are looking to private cellular networks to enable business transformation, but need solutions that integrate with their existing infrastructure. Through the deep strength of our combined solutioning with VMware, we’re giving customers in difficult-to-cover environments an easy on-ramp to private 4G and 5G with the performance and scale they require.”

The solution will be available to both direct customers and channel partners later this year.
