F1 Fans Experience Verizon's 5G Ultra Wideband in Miami

By Greg Tavarez

Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband is providing a high-speed broadband-like connection with download speeds up to 1 gigabit per second and the capacity to support data-heavy actions from multiple devices at one time in more than 75 stadiums and arenas, a dozen airports and over 1,700 cities around the country.

The Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix 2022 was the first F1 race in the U.S. with access to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband.

Fans at the track were able to get close to the racing action with 5G Multi-View and the Ultra Pass. Verizon 5G Multi-View allowed fans with a 5G-capable device to view up to seven live camera angles in HD and hear live race commentary. Fans curated a personal viewing experience in real-time, seeing angles of the track they normally would not see from their seat.

With Ultra pass, fans were able to see three different 360-degree camera angles with audio from the concert stage streamed in 4K, providing a unique interactive experience. Fans had the ability to switch from one camera to the next, which enabled them to customize their second screen experience so they can feel like they are stepping onstage and see exclusive vantage points of the show regardless of where they were on the Miami GP campus.

Verizon also took autonomous retail to a new level for race fans. Working with AiFi and the Miami Dolphins, Verizon launched The Hard Rock Stadium Express Shop, powered by 5G Ultra Wideband and mobile edge compute. This allowed event attendees to avoid long lines and quickly grab snacks and beverages. Event attendees would tap their credit card upon entering, then shop and exit. They received a receipt via text in minutes.

AiFi’s computer vision technology was able to track items as they are selected off the shelves because of Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband’s capacity and speed. The autonomous store was also running on Verizon 5G Edge with Amazon Web Services Wavelength, a real-time edge compute platform.

“Verizon is laser-focused on creating new 5G-powered innovations, unearthing what’s possible using the power of our network and working with partners to transform industries ranging from sports to retail,” said Srini Kalapala, senior vice president of Verizon Technology and Product Development. “This is only the tip of the iceberg as to the experiences that 5G and edge compute can unlock.”
